Healthy spring lawn in a Novato Marin County backyard

Spring Lawn Care in Marin County: What Actually Moves the Needle

Marin County lawns come out of a wet winter compacted, matted, and often patchy. Spring is the window where the right sequence of work will set the lawn up for the entire year, and the wrong sequence will just spread the problem. Here is what we actually do on our own maintenance clients' lawns in Novato and the surrounding Marin communities every spring.

Wait for the ground to dry out before you touch it

Working saturated soil compacts it further. If you sink into the lawn when you walk on it, hold off on aeration, mowing, or fertilizing for another week or two. This one bit of restraint saves a lot of damage.

Aerate before you do anything else

Compacted lawns cannot absorb water, air, or nutrients evenly. Core aeration pulls small plugs of soil out and lets everything else you do afterward actually reach the root zone. If the lawn feels hard, if water runs off instead of soaking in, or if you have bare patches that keep coming back, aeration is where spring starts. Our aeration service covers most residential lawns in Novato in under two hours.

Overseed while the holes are still open

The cores from aeration leave perfect small pockets for seed to germinate. Broadcasting quality grass seed within a day or two of aeration gets it directly into contact with soil, which is exactly what seed needs. A light topdress of compost over the top holds moisture during germination.

Check your irrigation before it becomes a problem

Winter can shift heads, freeze crack lines, and knock timers offline. Before the first hot week, run each zone manually and walk the yard. Look for misting heads that need pressure regulation, patches getting no water, patches getting too much, and anything watering the sidewalk. Fix these in April and you save water, money, and a lot of brown patches in July.

Mow high, mow often, keep the blade sharp

Most Marin lawns are healthier at three to three and a half inches than at two. Longer grass shades the soil, holds moisture, and outcompetes weeds. Sharp blades cut cleanly, dull blades tear and stress the plant. If you cannot remember the last time you sharpened your mower blade, it needs it.

Fertilize based on what your lawn needs, not the calendar

A soil test costs almost nothing and tells you what your specific yard actually needs, which is usually not what the bag at the hardware store is selling. Slow release fertilizer applied at the right rate feeds the lawn for weeks. Heavy synthetic fertilizer applied in a rush greens the top for a few days and burns the roots.

The one thing to skip

Weed and feed products applied broadcast across the lawn are almost always the wrong tool. Spot treat weeds where they are, leave the rest of the lawn alone, and let a thick healthy lawn crowd weeds out on its own. Every year our maintenance clients whose lawns look the best in July are the ones who resisted the urge to apply weed and feed in April.
